Vitamin D

The best sources for vitamin D are fish, eggs, milk, and cod liver oil. But did you know that your body can produce vitamin D simply by getting ten minutes of sun exposure per day? It's true! The main function of vitamin D in the body is to maintain proper calcium and phosphorus levels in your blood. Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium and therefore helps your body maintain strong and healthy bones and may even help protect your body from common ailments such as osteoporosis, high blood pressure, and certain types of cancer.

But what happens to your body if you do not get enough vitamin D? Children who do not get enough vitamin D may develop rickets, which could result in deformities of the skeleton. If adults do not get enough vitamin D, they could suffer from weak muscles and weak bone. You may be at risk for a vitamin D deficiency if you are older, over weight, or do not have very much exposure to the sun.

If you are concerned that you or a loved one may not be getting enough vitamin D, you may want to talk to your doctor and consider a vitamin D supplement. The best way to make sure you are getting sufficient nutrition for your bodies needs is to eat a healthy, varied diet, but vitamin supplements can help give your body what it needs when your diet falls short. No matter how you do it, make sure you give your body what it needs!
