The Importance of Getting Enough Calcium
Growing and maintaining healthy and strong bones is crucial to one’s health. It is important that your body is getting enough calcium in order to ensure your bones stay strong and to prevent osteoporosis. Making sure you get enough calcium is important for your health and wellbeing.
Calcium is found mainly in your teeth and bones. It is a mineral and will start taking calcium from the bloodstream if there is not enough in the bones. If you do not give yourself enough calcium, and it’s forced to take from your bloodstream, then your bones will get fragile and weak, becoming more prone to breaking and accidents. As people grow and their bones reform and grow, it is important to get the right amount of calcium so your body isn’t deprived. Give your body the building blocks it needs for comprehensive growth and repair.
If you don’t get enough calcium, you run the risk of getting osteoporosis which is when you have low bone mass. It is a serious disease and can cause people to get fractures and break their bones easier. There is no cure for osteoporosis so taking the proper steps to prevent it is key. Females, especially those over 65, have a higher chance of getting osteoporosis and should make sure to get their daily intake of calcium starting at a young age so their bones don’t deteriorate when they are older. Also smokers and people who do not exercise regularly have a greater chance of getting it.
To avoid osteoporosis, make sure you are getting enough vitamin D daily, exercise, and refrain from smoking or drinking too much alcohol. Also be sure to take a Bone Mineral Density test regularly to make sure everything is working right and your calcium levels are normal. This test measures the calcium in your bones and can help prevent osteoporosis early on.
On the other hand, you should not overdo it on your calcium intake either. Taking too much calcium can cause kidney stones and other side effects so it is important to take the exact amount for the best health results.
For those who are lactose intolerant and can’t drink milk, the main source of calcium for most people, there are other options to get the right amount. You can eat yogurt or purchase leafy green vegetables high in calcium. There are also many lactose-free products on the market right now, including ice cream and milk so you can still get the calcium you need.
