Since the beginning of time, people have been looking for a magical way to melt off unwanted pounds. Being thin consumes the minds of many Americans every day and many people turn to diet supplements as a get-skinny quick tactic to lose weight. There are literally hundreds of diet pills on the market today and, unfortunately, many use crazy marketing tactics to pull people in before they are revealed as scams. Although the only surefire way to lose weight is to diet and exercise, many people still turn to diet supplements as well. Here are the top ten myths about diet supplements.

1. Hoodia suppresses your appetite. Hoodia is an African herb many people ingest to suppress hunger. It contains an ingredient called P57 and researchers have found that it does make their test animals less hungry then the ones that were not given the herb. However, there is no concrete proof.

2. Diet supplements replace diet and exercise: This is a complete myth. Diet supplements should be treated as an added aid not the only key to weight loss. For the best results it is crucial to exercise and not over-eat every day.

3. Green tea helps burn fat: It has been shown that green tea does have a little effect on weight loss but nothing significant or long-term. This myth was probably created because of the high levels of caffeine in green tea.

4. If it’s in a store it’s safe: Like most products, it is wise to talk to a medical professional first before you embark on your own weight-loss journey. They can give you tips and help guide you in the right direction.

5. Natural supplements don’t have any side effects: Any foreign substance in your body has the potential to cause side effects; even “natural” products.

6. Supplements are a waste of money: This is not true. Products like Alli have been clinically proven to help people lose weight. It is important to do your research before purchasing a supplement.

7. You should only stick to one supplement: Over the years the body gets used to the supplement and doesn’t respond the same. It’s okay to mix it up.

8. Supplements can only be taken with food: It is better to take most supplements with food. Plus, meals tend to be a good marker to remember to take the pill throughout the day.

9. It takes weeks to see results: It depends on the product, but most supplements take one or two weeks to see results.

10. It’s okay to substitute a meal with a pill: This is completely false. You should maintain a healthy eating schedule while taking the supplements.
