How to Start a Detox Routine

Many people are turning to detox plans not only to lose weight but to cleanse their body of negative toxins and chemicals. There are many varieties of detoxifications; some that last only one or two days and others that can last for up to a month or more. There are also many different extremes of detoxifications—some consist only of drinking liquids while others allow specific foods that can be eaten at certain times throughout the day.

Before going on a detox it is important to talk to your doctor about what you hope to achieve, the health risks involved and possible side effects. People with extreme medical conditions or sensitive stomachs should probably not do too extreme of a detox. You should also choose to detox during a non-stress time in your life. You will more than likely move at a slower pace and should suspend overly physical activities while you are on the detox. You’re body isn’t getting enough nutrients at the time to sustain extreme activities.

There are many detoxifications to choose from. One extreme one is the three day water diet where you only drink purified water. Others include fasting for two to three days then only eating a fruit or vegetable at each meal. Another popular detox is the raw food diet where you only eat uncooked foods for a month.

One of the most popular celebrity diets involves drinking a special concoction of water, maple syrup and cayenne pepper for a week or two. Beyonce used this method to lose 20 pounds when she starred in the movie Dreamgirls. This is a very extreme form of dieting and you should definitely talk to your doctor or health professional before you attempt this detox. Safety should always take precedence over the detox.

When you first start a detox your body will take a few days to adjust to the extreme changes. You might suffer from cramps, irritability and irregular bowels. If you start to feel too weak or dizzy you might want to consider ending the detox early. Once again, your health should always be your number one priority over losing weight or purging your body. Make sure to tell a close friend or partner you are on the detox so they can monitor you as well just in case anything goes wrong. Once you are fully aware of all the risks and side effects you can start the detox of your choice.
