Many people don’t even look at the labels which are there to help you make healthy food choices. By looking at the labels you will be able to see what you are puting into your body on a daily basis and know how to plan your meals accordingly.
The first part you should look at is the serving size as it tells you how many servings are in the item you are holding. For example if it is a can of beans and it says the serving size is half a cup and then says that there are three servings per container, you are eating three times the daily intake your body needs. Knowing how much one product has will help you from overeating or overdoing it in one area.
Next, look at the calories, carbohydrates, protein and fat. It shows you the percentage of the daily intake that you need in your diet. Products high in sodium or saturated fat should be avoided. Look for low-sodium options when you are buying canned foods and prepackaged products because they tend to have a higher salt content. Also make sure to pay close attention to the percent of protein, fat and carbs in the product. Some people think fat is a bad thing but you need a certain percent of fat in your daily diet; it just depends on what type of fat it is.
The next section highlights the vitamins and minerals found in the product. All food products must include calcium, iron, vitamin A and vitamin C information on their packaging. If something has zero percent of one thing you need to add something to your meal to balance it out and get the proper amount of each. The last point is the suggested daily amount. It shows that the average human needs 2,000 to 2,500 calories a day but this number is different for everybody.
