How to Improve Your Child's Eating Habits
Child obesity is an epidemic in the United States and there is a growing concern for children’s health as the problem gets worse. Although many school lunch programs around the country have modified their menus to incorporate healthier food options and more fruits and vegetables, the real problem is rooting in the child’s home life. Children learn their eating habits from their parents and mimic their ways. If you are eating poorly, your child will more than likely follow into the same bad habits. That’s why it is important to nip these habits in the bud now before your child’s health is in serious risk.
One of the biggest changes you can make is making more meals at home. Most families in the United States have two working parents which makes eating home-cooked meals difficult at times. More and more people are opting to run by the drive-thru or grab a bucket of fried chicken then sitting down as a family. Take one day a week to prepare several meals that can be frozen or refrigerated throughout the week. This way when you come home it will be ready to go and you don’t have the excuse of being tired.
Another way to curb your child’s eating habits is to pack their lunch. Make sure to include one fruit and vegetable and avoid junk food. Reserve one day a week to add an extra sweet, cookie or junk food item like a slice of pizza. By packing their lunch and not just giving them money to buy their own food, you are able to monitor and keep track of what they are eating throughout the day.
Many parents have a hard time saying no when it comes to their kids, but saying no might have a positive impact on their health. Don’t give in if they ask you for a candy bar when you’re in line at the grocery store and only go out for an ice cream or special treat once a week. Reserve a day that is their special treat day where they are allowed to pick one special thing. This will teach them moderation and self-control and make the dentist happy with the limited intake of sugar.
Ensuring your child is in good health is in your hands. By making small changes in their diet and showing them that you abide by the same rules will help them develop healthy eating habits into their adult lives.
