10 Easy Ways to Turn Around a Bad Diet
It’s never too late to teach an old dog new tricks. Just because you don’t have the best diet habits now doesn’t mean you can’t turn them around today. Here are some helpful tips to help get you started.
1. Drink a glass of water before each meal: Drinking just one glass of water before each meal has been proven to help curb overeating. Not only is water good for your skin and overall health but it fills you up and you are more likely to eat less during the actual meal. Avoid sodas and fruit juices and you will slash up to 300 calories a day alone!
2. Downsize your dinner plates: Use a salad plate instead of a normal dinner plate during your meal. Smaller surface area equals smaller meals which equals big changes in your weight loss journey.
3. Pack 100 calorie snacks in your bag instead of candy bars or packaged cookies. 4. Drink regular coffee: Try to avoid sugary blended and whipped coffee drinks because they are chalk-full of calories. Opt instead for normal coffee or decaf to start your morning or end your night.
5. Eat cereal for breakfast: Studies have shown that people who eat breakfast maintain healthier eating habits throughout the day. Cereal is a great source of energy in the morning and helps suppress your appetite until the next meal.
6. Only eat when you’re hungry: Try to avoid keeping snacks in your office or going to the lunch room to graze. Only pull out a snack if you are really hungry, not just because you are bored or feel like it is the thing to do. Chewing gum is handy to have close by as well because it keeps your mouth busy and takes your mind off of eating.
7. Watch one less hour of television: Research shows that people who spend less time in front of the TV are more active all around. So turn off the boob tube and go for a jog instead.
8. Limit how many times you go out to eat every week. People who go out to eat more than twice a day tend to be more overweight then people who cook their own meals and bring their lunch to work.
9. Brush your teeth after every meal: Research has shown that people who brush their teeth after every meal have less of an appetite between meals then those who don’t brush their teeth. If you are unable to brush after every meal, pop in a stick of gum to suppress hunger pains.
10. Get rid of condiment calories: Extra salad dressing, creamy sauces, butter, mayonnaise and other condiments are often overlooked when people start calorie counting. Try to make a conscience effort to not add too many sides or extras to your meals (for example substitute mustard or light mayo for mayonnaise on your sandwich) and you will notice the pounds will start to drop.
